Courtesy: PTINew Delhi,Nov 1, 2026 16:08 ISTRenuka Singh revealed that she had considered quitting Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) after struggling to perform for the franchise in the Women's Premier League (WPL).
The Indian pacer said the pressure of her hefty price tag, coupled with a string of poor performances, took a toll on her during her initial seasons with the two-time champions. In 23 matches across three seasons for RCB, Renuka claimed 13 wickets at an economy rate of 8.34.Her first season was particularly difficult, as she managed just one wicket from six matches at an economy rate of 9.54. It was during that difficult phase that she approached captain Smriti Mandhana and told her that she no longer wanted to play because she was unable to perform.
Interestingly, Smriti was going through a difficult season herself, averaging around 18 with the bat as RCB failed to progress beyond the first round. Also Read: A 15-year-old in the WPL too: Meet Uma Kashvi, Delhi Capitals' latest sensation “I went up to Smriti and told her, ‘Smriti, I don't want to play anymore because I'm not able to perform.’ She immediately replied, ‘I'm not performing either.’ She said the same thing. I told her, ‘But I'm just not able to do it’,” Renuka said in an interview with Filmygyan.‘NEVER RECEIVED THAT KIND OF MONEY’Renuka was among the highest-paid players at the inaugural WPL auction, with RCB securing her services for Rs 1.50 crore.
The right-arm pacer admitted that the price tag brought an additional layer of pressure, making it difficult for her to cope with her struggles on the field. “The team was also losing matches, so we couldn't really understand what was happening to us. It was the first-ever WPL season, and we had been bought for such huge amounts of money.
That brought a different kind of pressure.“I mean, I had never received that kind of money before. There was this added pressure of thinking, ‘A team has trusted me enough to spend so much money on me, but I'm not able to perform.’”Renuka endured another difficult season in 2024, managing just two wickets from 10 matches.
However, she bounced back emphatically in the following edition, picking up 10 wickets in seven matches to rediscover her form.EXTRA PRESSURE AT RCB DUE TO FAN FOLLOWINGAhead of the 2026 mega auction, RCB released Renuka, following which Gujarat Giants secured her services for Rs 60 lakh. The pacer said that while the team environment at the Giants was not very different from RCB, playing for the Bengaluru franchise came with additional pressure because of its massive fan following.“There is a little more pressure at RCB, actually, because the fan following is so massive.
I felt a bit of pressure there because two seasons with RCB hadn't gone well. Obviously, when you don't perform, you do feel that pressure, especially because of the fans,” Renuka said.“But it's not that there is a huge difference at GG.
RCB also had a very good environment. As I said, that's one of Smriti's qualities – she knows how to create a positive atmosphere within the team.
It's the same at GG as well. The environment is really good.“At the end of the day, it depends on how you play and how you interact with people.
That matters. Ultimately, whichever team you play for, your job is to perform,” Renuka added.Renuka picked up seven wickets in nine matches in her maiden season with Gujarat Giants.
The franchise subsequently retained the Indian pacer ahead of the recent auction in Kochi. Having found her rhythm again, Renuka will be hoping to carry that form into the upcoming edition and make a bigger impact for the Giants.- Ends
