After spending 10 minutes searching for a white earbud lost in gravel, a man turned to ChatGPT, which pinpointed the device using photographs.A man used ChatGPT to find his lost earbud. (Photos: ChatGPT/Reddit) Finding a white earbud in white gravel is the sort of task that tests both patience and eyesight. One man, however, decided to outsource the hunt to ChatGPT after 10 frustrating minutes, and the chatbot came through with an image pinpointing the missing device. The 'rescue' began on a Friday evening when the man was leaving a park with his son.

As they approached the parking lot, his son was not listening to him, prompting him to sprint after the child. In the rush, his earbud case slipped out of the front pocket of his hoodie and burst open when it hit the ground. The impact sent his left earbud flying into the gravel. What followed was a frustrating search against the clock.

The tiny white device blended into the pale stones, and with the sun setting, the chances of spotting it seemed to shrink by the minute. “I spent a solid 10 minutes searching, knowing there’s basically no way I’m going to find a tiny white earbud in a sea of white gravel, especially with the sun setting,” he recounted in a post shared on Reddit. With no luck on the ground, he decided to try a different approach. Having used ChatGPT for “a lot of stuff”, he suddenly realised that the chatbot might be able to help him spot what his eyes could not.

Instead of continuing to scan the gravel, he took photographs of the area and uploaded them to the AI chatbot, asking it to locate the missing earbud. According to his account, ChatGPT asked him to send more closely cropped pictures so it could examine the ground in greater detail. He followed the instructions and sent additional images.

Within less than a minute of receiving the closer shots, the chatbot reportedly identified the earbud and returned an image marking its location. The search that had seemed almost hopeless suddenly had a solution.Sharing his amazement at the result, the man wrote, “It didn’t even take five minutes, and I’ll be damned, it actually found it.” He also admitted that he genuinely did not think he would have recovered the device without ChatGPT’s help.See the post here:The account caught the attention of users on Reddit and X, prompting discussions about how AI-powered image recognition could help with everyday problems. While chatbots are often used to write, research or answer questions, this incident offered a rather more practical use: finding a tiny object hiding in plain sight.Of course, the result does not mean AI can reliably locate every misplaced item.

Image quality, lighting and how clearly an object stands out can all affect what a chatbot identifies.Still, for one father facing a losing battle with a patch of gravel, ChatGPT proved to be an unexpectedly effective search companion. His experience also showed how a technology often associated with big questions can sometimes be useful for a much smaller problem: finding something lost right under your nose.- Ends
