Durga Puja Tragedy: Pandal Collapse, Stampede in Kolkata Narrow Lane Kills 17

Seventeen people have lost their lives following a pandal collapse and stampede in the Chorbagan area of Kolkata during Durga Puja festivities. A sudden surge of crowds seeking shelter from rain entered a narrow lane leading to the pandal, causing structural failure in a section of the installation. Questions have emerged regarding crowd management protocols, standard operating procedures, and emergency contingency plans by organisers and local authorities. Senior police officials and state administration teams are reviewing the incident at the site and hospital. The Chief Minister visited the injured at the hospital to take stock of medical arrangements and assess the situation before issuing formal remarks. Investigations are being initiated to determine whether deaths resulted directly from the stampede or falling metal debris from the collapsed structure.
