Democrat Rob Sand has been elected governor of Iowa, the Associated Press projects, a milestone as his party seeks to rebuild its political standing in the midwestern state.Sand, the state auditor who is the sole Democrat holding statewide office in Iowa, triumphed over Republican Zach Lahn, a political newcomer backed by Robert F Kennedy Jrâs âMake America healthy againâ movement.Itâs a significant victory for Democrats in Iowa, which twice backed Barack Obama but has voted for Trump all three times he was on the presidential ballot, while the GOP has come to dominate state politics. Sand is the first Democrat to win the governorâs office since 2006.Sandâs victory comes as Democrats netted historic victories in gubernatorial elections nationwide, including in states where they have struggled in recent years.
In Georgia, former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has become the first Black woman elected governor in the country.Sand, 44, is a native Iowan who has cast himself as a unifier who would restore balance to the stateâs politics.âTo Iowa Democrats, weâve had a hard few years here in Iowa, but balanced government has been restored,â Sand said at his victory party on Tuesday night as the crowd cheered. He had the crowd sing America the Beautiful together, a feature of his hundreds of town halls as he criss-crossed the state. He thanked the stateâs voters, and emphasized on how he intends to bring people to the table to improve water quality, accountability and the political process.âCome January, we will be forced to work together,â he said of the political parties, later adding: âLeft wing, right wing, same bird.âSand had been leading in the polls ahead of election day.
Lahn, who won the Republican primary over a candidate endorsed by Donald Trump, had been accused by Iowa Democrats of spending a disproportionate amount of time in Kansas, despite wanting to be governor of Iowa. The New York Times reported in October that although Lahn voted in Iowa in the 2024 general election, he had his ballot mailed to him in Kansas.Lahn had also faced scrutiny for his complicated ties to the Koch family, the Republican billionaire mega-donors.An emphasis on bipartisan, balanced politics had been a hallmark of Sandsâs campaign, with a focus on the need to return to Iowa as a âcommonsense stateâ.âI think a big piece of that was because we elected both Democrats and Republicans, and they had to work together to get anything done,â Sand said at a rally on 28 October.âWe have had 10 years of one-party control in the state of Iowa, and that is what led us to where we are today.âAt his victory party, Carol Sand, Robâs aunt, said that as a public school teacher, she was relieved that her nephew â a product of the public education system himself â would be in the governorâs office.âHeâs going to right the ship in Iowa and bring some accountability,â Carol Sand said.Rachel Leingang contributed reporting
