Of these, 309 have already been declared urban.

The remaining 48 received clearance from the Delhi Development Authority in February 2026 and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Standing Committee in May, according to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office. The move is aimed at bringing the villages under a structured planning framework for roads, water supply, sewerage and other civic amenities. “Urbanisation will lay the foundation for planned development and help improve planning for roads, sewerage and civic amenities,” Ms.

Gupta said. She added that development should improve residents’ quality of life while preserving the villages’ cultural identity.

Under Section 507(a) of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957, the villages will acquire urban status once the necessary notification is issued. The change will help civic agencies assess infrastructure requirements and inform planning under the Draft Master Plan 2041, the statement said.

However, urbanisation will not automatically lead to infrastructure projects or changes in land use, which will remain subject to applicable laws, approved plans, statutory permissions and availability of resources. Revised pay for MCD staff Separately, Ms.

Gupta disbursed revised salaries to around 4,000 Multi-Tasking Staff employees of the MCD’s Public Health Department. Their monthly pay has been increased to ₹28,800, comprising the minimum ₹18,000 under Level 1 of the Seventh Central Pay Commission’s pay matrix and applicable dearness allowance, MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar said.

Many of the employees, who conduct mosquito-breeding inspections, had protested last year over pay disparities. The MCD approved the revision on August 14 and issued an order on August 20.

Mayor Pravesh Wahi said the measure would cost approximately ₹52 crore annually. Published - October 24, 2026 01:22 am IST
