Members of the AITUC Street Vendors Association staged a sit-in protest in front of Zone V Corporation office on Friday, demanding that the underutilised vegetable market complex in Woraiyur be made operational. The vendors said the market complex, constructed at a cost of ₹4.40 crore and inaugurated earlier this year, remained largely unused, with the buildings reportedly falling into disrepair. The complex houses 76 stalls for vegetable and fruit vendors and nine stalls for meat vendors. The vendors urged the Corporation to open the shops for business and take action against contractors allegedly collecting daily rent in excess of the prescribed limit. They also demanded that the civic body operate the market directly instead of handing over its management to a contractor.Following talks with Corporation officials, the vendors were assured that their demands would be placed before the Corporation Council through a resolution for approval and implemented thereafter.
Subsequently, the protest was called off. Published - October 24, 2026 06:52 pm IST
