The Forest Department has warned of initiating stern action against persons who indulge in unauthorised use of electricity (AC power) for fences protecting farms and properties along forest boundaries, citing severe risks to wildlife and human lives.A notice issued by the Forest Range Officer, Coimbatore, emphasised that existing and newly proposed solar fences on agricultural lands must strictly comply with the technical guidelines outlined in the Government Order (G.O.104) issued on July 3, 2023 and as per the Tamil Nadu Solar Fencing (Registration and Regulation) Rules, 2023.Highlighting the dangers of using AC power directly into fences, the department noted that such practices have led to fatal accidents involving wild animals and, in some instances, humans. The notice stated that supplying direct electricity to fences constitutes a punishable offense under Section 135 of the Indian Electricity Act and the Wildlife Protection Act. Power connections would be disconnected if they are found to be used for illegal supply to fences, it said.
