The Bombay High Court on Monday granted an ad-interim injunction restraining unidentified entities and digital platforms from unauthorisedly recording, hosting, or streaming the forthcoming Namit Malhotra’s upcoming film, Ramayana: Rise of a Legend. The film officially releases on November 5, 2026.The interim protection was passed in a suit filed by Godpower Media Private Limited, which approached the court following an apprehension of copyright infringement through Anand and Naik legal company.
The suit sought comprehensive protection over the underlying script, characters, footage, lyrics, and recordings of the film. The court was informed that the film was produced for about 2,000 crores for Part I and the two parts had a combined budget of 4,000 crores.Godpower submitted that despite strict non-disclosure obligations during invite-only preview screenings, two of its trailers had been surreptitiously recorded and disseminated on digital networks. Apart from John Does, there are about 34 companies that appear as respondents, which are mainly the intermediaries.
An advocate representing Google LLC and global social media intermediaries said that they had no objection being passed to an order granting the interim relief and assured prompt action upon notification of offending links. The bench of Justice Madhav Jamdar in its order noted, “Prima facie, the plaintiff (Godpower) has real and well-founded apprehension that the film or parts of it will be recorded and uploaded, streamed, or communicated to the public on various platforms.” The reliefs granted by the Court encompass a dynamic injunction restraining rogue ‘John Doe’ entities from unauthorisedly disseminating the film. Directions also include ordering ISPs and social media intermediaries to immediately and dynamically block and take down offending links and mirror sites upon written notice. The court directed Godpower to communicate offending URLs carrying the film to Internet Service Providers and platforms who must immediately take steps to block, disable access to, or take down the infringing content. The court scheduled the matter for further hearing on December 16, and the ad-interim protections will operate until then.Ramayana: Rise of a Legend is directed by Nitesh Tiwari.
It is based on sage Valmiki's ancient epic text, Ramayan. It is produced by Namit Malhotra under DNEG and Prime Focus Studios, with Yash also serving as co-producer.The two-part cinematic epic features Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Goddess Sita, Ravie Dubey as Lakshman, Yash as Ravana and Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman.- Ends
